BORO satchel

Boro is a Japanese folk textile that has been extensively ‘repaired’ by patching and mending little scraps of other fabrics over worn-out areas or holes in the cloth. These textiles were ones used for everyday – futon covers, vests, fisherman’s coats, misquito netting – and hand woven of a plant fiber usually cotton. The layering of the fabrics extended the life of the piece during the 19th Century but today the beauty of the technique is found in the tatter of an edge, the unevenness of the stitches and the meandering of the thread. At our workshop you will learn the Boro hand stitching technique to create a beautiful satchel.
